Our assignment this week was to share an “evocative object” from our childhood. This is my dinosaur Kay or “K” - I’m not sure of the spelling because I named her when I was 2 or 3 and never wrote it out.
For a long time Kay was my favorite toy. I am told that I used to sleep with her every night - I’m not sure if it’s clear from the pictures but she is made of HARD PLASTIC. My mom says she used to think about taking Kay away when my face was smashed up against one of her claws as I slept, but that I loved Kay so much she didn’t.
I remember playing with Kay all the time. She was great at playing outside, in my room and especially in the bathtub. She is hollow inside, so I used to make her “eat things” but the best part of the hollow feature was that she had small hole in the side (I think it was an imperfection in manufacturing) which meant that she could pee! I loved making her “drink” water in the bath and watch her pee.
I also loved her color and the little white detail on her teeth and her red eyes. I loved the texture of her scales too. I remember petting her back to feel them and sometimes making “music” by rubbing a stick along her side.
As a side note, this was either the start of or part of my obsession with dinosaurs. For a while they were my favorite animal. I especially loved drawing pterodactyls.
