DATA ART BY DATA SCIENTISTS
Inspired by the book Dear Data, I worked with a group of colleagues to organize a data drawing happy hour at work. We provided pens and paper, rulers and stencils and a few guidelines for making engaging data visualizations. People were encouraged to find public datasets or use one of the datasets we had downloaded and cleaned. The night produced creative, beautiful and surprising visualizations related to topics ranging from languages spoke in Chicago, street festivals in the city, jobs and wages available as part of prison re-entry programs, subway (or "EL") ridership, potholes, to public libraries. We are now working on framing and mounting the finished works or art in our office.
