What is the role of animals in the “metaverse”? What do metaverse animals feel? Who cares for them?

In the metaverse we have to make everything front scratch - the sky, the ground, the clouds, water…even gravity. This project explores these question by asking if we will choose to include or exclude digital animals, how this will complicate our relationship to animals in the physical world and how this might alter our relationship with ourselves.

This project started as a way to learn new methods of 3D modeling. I completed a “50 days of making” project using Oculus Medium (a VR sculpting program now owned by Adobe) to create underwater sea creatures. Below are a few highlights. The process was also documented on my Instagram page @lydsicle.

This work was supported by IrisVR as an Artist-In-Residence project during the summer of 2019. Several of the sculpts were featured in an exhibit on Governor’s Island through the Center for the Holographic Arts. You can read more about the exhibit here.
